Happy Birthday, Maddox!

Today, the eldest Jolie-Pitt child, Maddox Chivan, turns 8 years old! The little man has been through quite a bit in his short life, so here is a brief retrospective. Click the “more” tab to view it!

In 2001, Angelina Jolie went to Cambodia to film Beyond Borders. While in the country, Angie visited an orphanage and met a 3-month old baby boy named Rath Vibol. She ended up forming a strong attachment to the little boy. As a result, the actress who was then known for being a “wild-child” made a decision that shocked the world: In March of 2002, she adopted the baby boy. She changed his name to Maddox Chivan Thornton Jolie. The “Thornton” part of the name was a nod to her then-husband, Billy Bob Thornton. Shortly after Maddox’s adoption, Angelina and Billy Bob split, due mostly to them having grown apart and having different focuses in life. Angelina’s focus had become Maddox, while Billy Bob wanted to focus on his music career. Angelina recieved sole custody of Maddox, and Thornton was dropped from his name. People were amazed at how quickly Angelina managed to turn her life around and how quickly she seemed to adjust to motherhood. In fact, Angelina herself remarked to PEOPLE about a year after Maddox’s adoption that “my baby saved my life!”. Maddox2

In 2005, Maddox went through two major changes. The first was that, after three years, he finally had a dad: Angelina’s new partner Brad Pitt. He also became a big brother when Angelina adopted 6 month old Zahara Marley from Ethiopia in July of that year (Brad’s name was not on the adoption papers, but he accompanied Angie and Maddox to Ethiopia to pick her up) . Later that year, Angie and Brad began the process of having Brad adopt both Maddox and Zahara, starting with changing their surnames from Jolie to Jolie-Pitt.

In Janaury of 2006, Angelina shocked the world once again, this time by announcing that she was pregnant with her and Brad’s first biological child (Angie had previously said that she wasn’t planning on having biological children). On May 27, 2006, Maddox became a big brother for the second time when his mom gave birth to Shiloh Nouvel at the Cottage Hospital in Swakopmund, Namibia. A few months after Shiloh’s birth, Angie shared that Maddox loved his newest sister.  “It’s like having this tiny pet he can just hold and look at,” she said.  Brad Pitt Gives Maddox a Piggy-Back Ride

In 2007, Maddox became a big brother for the third time when his parents adopted 3 1/2 year old Pax Thien from Vietnam in March. The adoption was done partly so Maddox could have a brother that looked like him and was from his birth continent. According to Angie, the brothers bonded quickly, with Maddox holding Pax’s hand and comforting him at the orphanage! Unfourtnately, Maddox’s life was filled with some sadness that year as well, as his maternal grandmother, Marcheline Bertrand, passed away just months before Pax was adopted. As the only Jolie-Pitt kid who really knew Marcheline (Zahara and Shiloh were just 2 and not even 1 years old when she passed away, too little to really remember her), I’m sure he felt some sadness at her passing. On July 12, 2008, Maddox became a big brother once again when Angelina gave birth to twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline at the Foundation Lenval Hospital in Nice, France. In the interview accompanying the twins’ first photoshoot, Angelina remarked that Maddox “Is the professional big brother. He’s asking when we can have more!” By the sounds of it, his wish will definently be granted! Angie and Brad have both mentioned that they still want more kids, and that they plan to adopt next. Sounds like Maddox will be getting another little sister from Africa in the not to distant future (since Angie and Brad have spoken about wanting to “balance the races”)! Maddoxbigboy

Now Maddox is a big boy of 8, and he has begun to accompany his mother on some of her humanatarian missions! Angie spoke about this in an interview for World Refugee Day, and Maddox accompanied her to Iraq just last month (in the picture above, he and Angie had just landed at Heathrow Airport in London on their way back to LA). It’s hard to believe that this young man was once the 7 month-old baby boy whom Angie adopted from Cambodia! Happy birthday Maddox!
