Brad and Angelina are ENGAGED!!!!!!

Yes, folks, you read that correctly. After seven years and six kids together, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have decided to make it official! Brad’s manager, Cynthia Pett-Dante, confirmed the happy news this past Friday, April 13th…proving that Friday the 13th isn’t always an unlucky day! She said that “It’s a promise for the future” and that “No date has been set yet”. In honor of this most joyus news, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at the many things that led Angie and Brad to this point. The retrospective will kick off below the cut.

April 2005: A New Romance

Rumors have been swirling for several months now that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are more than friends. When these pictures, which also include Angelina’s then three-year-old son Maddox, surface, that status is more than confirmed in most people’s minds!

July 2005: And Baby Makes Four?

Just three months after the beach photos surface, Angelina adopts her second child, a six-month-old Ethiopian baby girl that she names Zahara Marley. Angelina is the only parent named in the adoption papers, but Brad accompanies her (and new big brother Maddox!) to the orphanage to pick up the new little girl, and it isn’t long before pictures begin to emerge of him holding and seemingly bonding with her.

November 2005: Brad the Dad

As the months pass, we see more and pictures of Brad with Zahara and Maddox (not to mention Angie!). He seems to love being around them, and they him. With the four of them now living under one roof, it’s pretty safe to say that he is, for all intents and purposes, their father. So it comes as no surprise when, just before the close of the year, Angie and Brad make their first formal announcement as a couple: Brad is in the process of adopting both Maddox and Zahara, and to reflect that fact, their last name has been changed from Jolie to Jolie-Pitt.

January 2006: Angie and Brad’s Big Reveal

Shortly after the announcement of Brad’s adoption of Maddox and Zahara, the media and the general public alike notice that Angie’s stomach appears to be getting a bit rounder. She’s also wearing slightly baggier clothes than usual, and at times seems to be using Zahara and/or Maddox to delibritely cover her abdominal region. All of this sets tongues wagging, and just after the world ushers in 2006, Angelina confirms what people have been suspecting: Despite having said previously that she would be perfectly happy never having children biologically, she and Brad are expecting a baby!

May 2006: It’s A Girl!

After the announcement of Angie’s pregnancy, the world waits with baited breath. The world anticipates the birth of baby Jolie-Pitt with such fervor that some media outlets dub the little one “perhaps the most anticipated baby since Jesus”! What will the baby look like? Is the world ready for such cuteness (with two of the most beautiful people on the planet for parents, s/he is sure to be a stunner!)? Will the baby be a boy or a girl? Just where in the world will he or she be born (rumors have the birth taking place everywhere from LA to France)? And when, oh when, will that baby be born? The world got its answer to most of those questions on May 27th, 2006. For it was in the wee hours of that morning that Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt was born. The healthy baby girl weighed in at seven pounds and was born via C-section in Swakopmund, a resort town in Namibia. Shiloh made her public debut just weeks later, in a PEOPLE spread done when she was a mere five days old! And just as everyone had suspected, she was off the charts on the adorable scale!

March 2007: From Vietnam With Love

Just ten months after Shiloh’s birth, the Jolie-Pitt family grows yet again when Angelina adopts a three and a half-year-old Vietnamese boy. Meeting her new son was no doubt a comfort for Angie, as she had lost her beloved mother, Marcheline Bertrand, just two short months earlier. Although the fourth addition to the Jolie-Pitt family never knew his maternal grandmother, she left him a precious gift: His name, Pax Thien (Angelina later explained that Marcheline had given her and Brad a list of name suggestions when they were expecting Shiloh, and one of those suggestions was Pax). Angelina, Maddox, and Zahara all flew to Vietnam to meet him and welcome him into the family. Brad no doubt wanted to go, but he was filming The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and couldn’t (the production would have gone over schedule if he had). And as for little Shiloh? She couldn’t go because she was too busy making her debut as an actress! The twin toddlers who were supposed to play Brad’s character’s daughter apparently wouldn’t stop crying one day, so Brad suggested Shiloh fill in for the day. She did, and now has the distinction of being the only Jolie-Pitt kid thus far to appear in a movie alongside one of her parents!

February and May 2008: Babies on Board!

Beginning in late December 2007, Angie’s stomach once again appears to be changing shape, and once again she turns to baggy clothes. Remembering what those things meant two years earlier, people begin to wonder if yet another Jolie-Pitt is on the way. This speculation continues for two months. Then, at the end of February, Angie and Brad attend the Independant Spirit Awards…and Angie’s large, protruding midsection makes it obvious: For the third time in as many years, the Jolie-Pitt family is about to increase in size. That’s exciting enough but then, three months later, the world recieves even bigger news. While at the Cannes Film Festival, Angelina’s Kung Fu Panda costar Jack Black accidentally reveals during an interview (which Angie was also a part of) that the mother of four is, in fact, having twins! Luckily Angie and Brad don’t seem to mind, with Brad even going so far as to find Jack at the festival later and reassure him that he didn’t need to feel bad about spilling the beans. The world procedes to get so caught up in Jolie-Pitt twin mania that ET even erroneously states at the very end of May that Angie has given birth to twin girls named Isla and Amelie (a claim that the Jolie-Pitts quickly shoot down)!

July 2008: Twice as Nice

In early July 2008, Angelina is admitted to the Foundation Lenval Hospital in Nice, France, for what her doctor and a spokeswoman for the hospital call “routine monitoring”. They also state that she’s not in any danger and that, although she will likely remain in the hospital until she gives birth, the babies probably won’t make there appearence for at least another few weeks. None the less, Jolie-Pitt twin mania increases and media outlets clamor to be the first to break the news. In the end, none of them do. Instead, it is the Nice-Matin, a newspaper in Nice, that runs the July 12th announcement that Angelina has given birth (for real this time!). And it wasn’t two girls that she had. Instead, she had a girl AND a boy! Knox Leon was born at 6:27 p.m. and weighed 5.3 pounds, followed one minute later (like Shiloh, the twins were born via C-section) by his sister, Vivienne Marcheline, who weighed 5 pounds even. Like their big sister Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne made their debut in a PEOPLE spread…and were every bit as cute as her!

Fall 2009: Shiloh the Tomboy

Around Fall 2009, Shiloh starts sporting a new look. She wears pirate costumes, fedoras, and pretty much nothing “girly”. In early 2010, she debuts a new haircut- a very short one. That and her continued preference to dress “boyishly” sparks an explosion of comments, most of them negative. People insist that Angie is forcing her to dress like this and that it’s terrible. But Angie soon refutes those claims, explaining that Shiloh’s clothes and haircut are her choice. She then goes on to defend her daughter, saying “I want to do what’s in her heart, and what’s in her heart is to dress like that. I think it’s beautiful”. Two years later and Angie and Brad continue to ignore the critics and allow their middle daughter to dress the way she likes (and wear her hair the way she likes- she recently got her hair cut again). Here’s hoping they continue to do so!

April 2012: Going to the Chapel…

Almost exactly seven years after those first photos on the beach in Kenya surfaced, Angie and Brad announce their engagement. Although there is no date set, it is a “promise for the future” and the kids are “very happy”. Here’s to many more years of happiness for them and their family!
